Chinese roof tiles are fired from clay, which is the product of long-term weathering of certain
aluminosilicate minerals. It is named after its extremely strong viscosity.
In the Jiangnan area, whether it is a residential house or a temple, the roof is dominated by
Hewa (butterfly tile). This includes two methods of laying ash and not laying ash. Those who
do not lay ashes put the bottom tiles directly on the rafters, and then put the cover tiles directly
between the bottom tiles without putting any plaster in between. Craftsmen in the capital often
call this southern dry chamotte tile, and the material used is Chinese clay roof tile.
